About Commission Types

Commission types are codes used to define the various commission structures paid by your company.  Commission types are very flexible in that they can contain one or more levels of commission for varying commission rates to different levels of employees.  Commission types are then assigned to inventory items to determine the commission calculation(s) for that item.

This feature requires activation in Setup Human Resources.

Retroactive by QuantityInstructs the program to pay the amount determined by the highest quantity tier reached for that item during the commission period.

Step by MarginInstructs the program to pay the amount determined by the highest profit margin tier reached for that item during the commission period.

exampleFor example, consider an item that sells for $50 and costs $20.  One employee sold five of these items in one commission period.

Sale Percentage 10% / Tier: None

$50 sale / unit × 10% commission × 5 units = $25 commission

Sale Percentage / Tier: Retroactive by Quantity
With tiers as follows:
1 - 3                10%
4 - 6                15%
7 - 10                20%

$50 sale / unit  × 15% commission × 5 units = $37.50

Sale Percentage / Tier: Step by Quantity
With same tiers as above:
$50 sale amount × 3 first tier units × 10%        = $15.00
$50 sale amount × 2 second tier units × 15%        = $15.00
               Grand Total Commission        = $30.00

Sale Percentage / Tier: Step By Margin
With tiers as follows:
0.00-210.99%        0%
30.01-410.99%        15%
50.00-610.99%        25%
70.00-910.99%        50%

$30 profit / $50 price = 60% margin
25% × $50 sale / unit × 5 units = $62.50

Flat Amount $4 / Tier: None
$4 commission / unit × 5 units = $20 commission

Flat Amount / Tier: Retroactive by Quantity
With tiers as follows:
1 - 3                $4.00
4 - 6                $5.00
7 - 10                $7.00

$5.00 commission / unit  × 5 units = $25.00

Flat Amount / Tier: Step by Quantity
With same tiers as above:
$4.00 commission / unit × 3 first tier units        = $12.00
$5.00 commission / unit × 2 second tier units        = $10.00
               Grand Total Commission        = $22.00

Flat Amount / Tier: Step By Margin
With tiers as follows:
0.00-210.99%        $0
30.01-410.99%        $5
50.00-610.99%        $15
70.00-910.99%        $30

$30 profit / $50 price = 60% margin
$15 × 5 units = $75.00

Gross Profit Percentage 15% / Tier: None
$30 gross profit / unit  × 15% commission × 5 units = $22.50 commission

Gross Profit Percentage / Tier: Retroactive by Quantity
With tiers as follows:
1 - 3                20%
4 - 6                30%
7 - 10                40%

$30 gross profit / unit  × 30% commission × 5 units = $45.00 commission

Gross Profit Percentage / Tier: Step by Quantity
With same tiers as above:
$30 gross profit / unit  × 20% commission × 3 first tier units                = $18.00
$30 gross profit / unit  × 30% commission × 2 second tier units        = $18.00
                               Grand Total Commission        = $36.00

Gross Profit Percentage / Tier: Step By Margin
With tiers as follows:
0.00-210.99%        0%
30.01-410.99%        20%
50.00-610.99%        30%
70.00-910.99%        50%

$30 profit / $50 price = 60% margin
30% × $30 gross profit / unit × 5 units = $45.00

Commission Levels

Commission levels are used to distinguish different rates paid to employees for this commission type.  Each employee is assigned a base commission level.  The employee level will be used to determine which level of commissions for each type should be paid to the particular employee for transactions which marked that employee as the salesperson.

Employees may also be assigned an override commission level, to apply commissions for transactions assigned to a department or location.

Tier Levels

If the commission tier type is set to Retroactive or Step, the program will present the tier grid to be completed.  First, enter the number that ends each of the quantity tiers, starting with the lowest number in the top field and working downward.

exampleFor example, if your tiers are 1 - 10, 11 - 50, 51 - 100, then you would place 10 in the top field, 50 in the next field down, and 100 in the next field down.  You can place up to five tiers.

In the remaining fields, enter the percentage or flat amount for each tier, for each price level defined.
